Sam recently had a lovely visit with Rancho Castillo Vineyard - see their comments below:
Today was a very special day. Our winemaker/co owner, Brett Wagner and I went to Willcox on winery business to look at production equipment and explore more sources for grapes.
We got the honor of hanging out with a legendary Arizona wine Pioneer Sam Pillsbury. We went out to Pillsbury winery to taste his wine.
We talked about grapes, wild yeast, the current struggles of the wine industry, what makes AZ wines so unique and pondered the future of the industry. He opened bottles for us that were not on the tasting list.
Poetry in a bottle.
I have met Sam Pillsbury many times in the past but only as another face at a busy wine festival. It was an honor to be one on one with a true legend for over 2 hours.
This was my first time visiting his vineyard/tasting room. I regret that this was not my 20th visit. If you make the journey to Willcox AZ you must go to this winery. He is only open on the weekends.
Soon your opportunity to meet a true AZ wine legend will be gone, as he is currently working on retiring.
Sam Pillsbury is also an accomplished Producer, Director, and architect.
